Description

Stingrays are a group of sea rays, which are cartilaginous fish associated with sharks. Many species are threatened with extinction. They are classified in the Myliobatoidei suborder of the order Mylierapformes and consist of eight families: Hexatrygonidae (six-ray stingrays), Plesiututdae (deep-sea stingrays), Urolophidae (stingrays), Urotrygonidae (round rays), Dasyatidae (ash streams). ), Gymnuridae (butterfly rays), and Myliututdae (eagle rays).

Stingrays are commonly found in tropical and subtropical coastal waters throughout the world. Some species, such as Dasyatis thetidis, are found in warmer temperate oceans, and others, such as Plesiobatis daviesi, are found in the deep sea. River stingrays, and a number of whiptail stingrays (like Niger stingrays), are limited to fresh water. Most myliobatoids are demersal (inhabiting zones close to the lowest in the water column), but some, such as pelagic stingrays and eagle rays, are pelagic.
