A recent report from Rabobank noted that global shrimp production in 2023 is predicted to reach 6 million tons. Four million tons of this will come from producers in Asia. The rest will come from producers in the Americas, particularly Ecuador.
The report, titled “What To Expect in the Aquaculture Industry in 2023”, said that although shrimp production in 2022 faced challenges in production costs and market conditions, production is projected to continue to rise. Globally, world shrimp production in 2022 grew about 4.2 percent from the previous year.

In Asia alone, 2023 production is expected to grow by 4 percent. This growth is driven by a rebound in production by China and India, as well as a slight increase from Vietnam.

Rabobank also predicts that Indonesia’s shrimp production trend will remain positive in 2023 with a 6.2 percent increase in production from the previous year. This means that according to them, Indonesia’s shrimp production (vannamei and tiger) will reach 400 thousand tons.
While in 2022 itself, Indonesian shrimp production grew positively from the previous year by 3.5 percent. Nikolik and Sharma said that Indonesia’s shrimp production in 2022 managed to exceed Indonesia’s highest shrimp production in 2016 which reached 360 thousand tons.
